Key Lighting Trends for 2012

Last week we visited the Lighting Show at Interiors UK in the Birmingham NEC. As usual, they were showcasing the very best in British and international lighting design and the brand new lighting designs were attracting a lot of attention. As we persused the stands we kept our eyes peeled for the lighting trends that will shine bright in 2012 and here, we give you the lowdown.

The buzz word for lighting in the coming year is most definitely LEDs and because these lamps are so compact, the gorgeous designs achieved are a far cry from what has come before with incandescant and compact flourescents. The sizes, shapes and structures attained are innovative, highly stylish and because the technology is becoming more advanced, the lamps are much brighter.

Another mega lighting trend for 2012 is ‘Industrial’ and although this look has been gaining momentum in 2011 it has really come into its own for this year. This lighting is all about no-nonsense design with British practicality, which gives birth to an incredibly striking look that wont date as quickly as other trends. Look out for oversized, metal pendants and floor lamps that will make an effortless addition to your home.

Last year, it was all about the cool metals like polished chrome, silver and aluminium but this year they are making way for the Warm Metals of gold, bronze and copper. This year the designs are warmer, softer and more tactile with lots of texture, layers and crystals. There will be a wide range of light fittings available in ‘Warm Metals’, from chandeliers to wall lights and table lamps, which will add a touch of glamourous tranquility to your home this year.

Illuminated Bathroom Mirrors

The illuminated mirror plays a very important role in the overall design of your bathroom and is an essential item that allows us to carry out our daily tasks of make up application, shaving and other grooming procedures. Exciting New Lighting from Franklite!

Franklite have launched some fantastic new ranges and as usual the designs are stunning and of the highest quality.

The striking Cascatta Flush Ceiling Fittings are truly inspirational in design with a mass of crystal glass drops hanging from a polished chrome finish ceiling plate. Each fitting has a surround of faux leather, available in white or black, that is studded with tiny shimmering crystals. These lights are available as a square or circle and are suitable for dimming.

The Fusion range of Italian ironwork light fittings are available in an antique or pale cream finish with a subtle hint of hand painted gold and a gold finish curved relief bar across the arms. Each arm has a sparkling crystal glass sconce and lights are available with optional silk candle shades. There are 4 sizes of chandelier and a wall light to choose from.

For the bathroom, these substantial cast brass fittings, shown below, are finished in polished chrome and have gorgeous glossy opal glass spheres. This FL2257 range is traditional in design but the glossy sphere shades give a contemporary feel therefore crossing the design spectrum and making it easily adaptable to many interiors.

Light Up Your Festive Dining Table

Over the festive period your dining table takes centre stage as your family and friends gather to eat, drink and be merry. But, creating the perfect festive atmosphere is not just about the tasty spread of food or the gorgeous linens and table decorations. The right overhead table light will play the most mood-enhancing part in your Christmas extravaganza!

A sparkling chandelier over your beautifully decorated dining table will create the right ambiance and by putting the chandelier or pendant on a dimmer you can have the ample task lighting as well as the ample amount of light for a pleasureable dining experience.

The Dar Charleston range has various sizes of chandelier, is available in an antique gold or cream gold colour finish and has a wall bracket to match. A very general rule of thumb for the size of chandelier or pendant you require would be that it is 12”(30cm) narrower than the width of your table and that it hangs about 30”(75cm) above the table. This may vary depending on the height of your ceilings and the size of your table so your work out your own measurements before buying.

As well as the centre pendant, you should add layers of light with wall fittings and table lamps. This will create the overall balance of light required to illuminate your dining room.
