It is easy to brush off burglary as a crime you are unlikely to ever be affected by. Of course, the statistics suggest that is, thankfully, the case. But there is no such thing as being too secure.
Whether you live in a country estate or a small terraced home, there is plenty to be gained by investing in the latest security solutions and keeping a watchful eye over your neighbourhood.
The Portsmouth News this week issued advice to local people, with break-ins in the Hampshire city said to have risen by 3.6 per cent in 2011. Although the police can be trusted to tackle such incidents, the newspaper was keen to point out that prevention is always better than cure.
So what should you do to try and lower the threat of criminals breaking into your home? One obvious option is to invest in outdoor lights, which can be positioned around the perimeter of a property.
By illuminating your walls, side passages and pathways through the night, would-be thieves are likely to be put off the idea of picking on you.
Similarly, it is important that an abode does not look empty at any time. So whether you're simply off for a family day out or have a fortnight in the sun booked, taking some time to ensure signs of life are recorded is wise. This could mean asking a friend to turn lights on or off and move the post.
According to the newspaper, another shrewd step is to install an alarm. As long as this is done by a professional and well maintained, it will go some way to repelling burglars.
Of course, security is not the only reason to use outdoor lights. They can also be deployed to show off a magnificent feature or draw attention to a particular monument. LEDs Magazine recently told how this is the case at the Louvre museum in Paris, where lighting is being upgraded.
