For students or businesspeople contemplating pulling an all-nighter to get your latest essay, exam revision, presentation or report ready, here are some top tips on how to stay awake while studying.
We’ve all been there. We have an essay due in the morning and we’ve barely started it. We have a crucial exam the next day and we are struggling to cram in enough revision. We are delivering a make-or-break report at work next week and it has to be absolutely flawless. Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day!
Often we resort to staying up really late and working into the early hours of the morning, even pulling an all-nighter, but some of the techniques we use to stay awake while studying are not good for our health.
Energy drinks that are high in sugar and caffeine are poor for our diet, while any pills to stay awake should be avoided like the plague. Instead, there are much more natural ways to help your brain stay awake, including changing the ways you light your study areas.

Using lights to help stay awake while studying
Lights are absolutely crucial in affecting how tired we feel. Scientists have shown that different levels or colours of light can essentially trick the brain into feeling more or less tired. Basically, the science says that altering the colours of the lights at different stages of long haul journeys helps the passengers’ brains adapt to long haul flights. When it is time to sleep, for example, silvery light imitating moonlight helps the passengers drift off, while orange or yellow lights immediately before that, mimicking cosy candlelight, can help people unwind.
In other words, studying in dull or poorly lit areas will help make you feel tired. Studying in light, bright areas, though, will help your brain stay awake while studying.
Other ways of using lights to stay awake while studying
Lights nowadays are so good that they can often recreate daylight in your home. Daylight-lights are a great addition to any study room, in order to help keep your brain active.
It also helps to sit as close as you can to the source of the light, which means investing in a table lamp or desk lamp. This is preferable to relying on a sole ceiling light, which may be blocked out by the shadow of your body for example.
Drinking lots of water, opening a window, chewing gum or eating sugary snacks may also help you stay awake wile studying, but getting your lighting right is the key.
